Single Stick Syllabi - Club Night

Single Stick

For the Summer Session, our lessons will divert from the modern fencing weapons (Foil, Epee, and Saber) and we will instead be learning about Single Stick fencing. “Single Stick” is a wood or rattan shaft normally with a hand protector called a “Basket” made of hardened leather. The Single Stick is used much like a Saber and was used historically as a military training sword throughout Europe, but centered in and around Britain.

Each night of fencing will consist of one hour of instructed lesson time focusing on learning about and fencing with Single Sticks, followed by one hour of open/supervised fencing where fencers can fence with Foil, Epee, or Saber.

Equipment Recommendations: Recommended Single Stick safety equipment can vary a little bit from the standard uniform required for classical or modern fencing. Single Sticks and Baskets will be provided, as well as fencing masks but it is recommended that participants also wear a fencing jacket and or a sweatshirt to provide additional padding, in Single Stick hits to the bony parts of the elbow and wrist can be a bit more painful than what we experience with the other sword styles we have used, so it is recommended but not required to wear a lightweight wrist and or elbow pad.
