Seven-Week Session Design for Parent-Child Participation in Fencing

Overview

This seven-week session is designed for parents and children to engage in fencing activities together, fostering skill development, teamwork, and a love for the sport. Each week will consist of instructional time, practice drills, and collaborative activities. We will take the first 30 minutes for announcements and stretches while discussing various character traits.

Session Outline

Week 1: Introduction to Fencing

  • Goals: Familiarize families with fencing equipment, basic rules, and etiquette.

  • Activities:

    • Equipment fitting and safety briefing.

    • Demonstration of basic footwork.

    • Position 1 - Un Guard

      • Learn: advance & retreat

      • Parent-child pairs practice advancing and retreating steps.

    • Position 2 - Lunge

      • Learn: thrust & lunge

      • Parent-child pairs practice the lunge

    • Speed round on what each student can practice, all they have learned

Week 2: Defensive Techniques

  • Goals: Introduce the concept of defense and timing.

  • Activities:

    • Learn: Parry 4 & 6

    • Parent-child pairs practice attacks and defending with parries.

    • Speed round on what each student can practice, all they have learned

Week 3: Defensive Techniques

  • Goals: Introduce the concept of defense and timing.

  • Activities:

    • Learn: Parry 7 & 8.

    • Counter Attacks

    • Parent-child pairs practice parries and counterattacks.

    • Speed round on what each student can practice, all they have learned

Week 4: Footwork Enhancement

  • Goals: Improve agility and control through footwork.

  • Activities:

    • Learn: forward and Backward crossovers.

    • Parent-child pairs practice focusing on maintaining distance during practice.

    • Speed round on what each student can practice, all they have learned

Week 5: Attack Enhancement

  • Goals: Improve your reach in the lunge position.

  • Activities:

    • Learn: Addoppio.

    • Explain: Right-A-Way

    • Parent-child pairs practice focusing on maintaining Right-A-Way.

    • Speed round on what each student can practice, all they have learned

Week 6: Tournament

  • Goals: Introduce tournament formats.

  • Activities:

    • Explanation: the different tournament styles.

    • Fun games integrating swords,

    • Three-point bouts.

Week 7: Skills Showcase

  • Goals: Celebrate achievements and reinforce community spirit.

  • Activities:

    • Preparation for skills showcase where participants demonstrate learned techniques.

    • Award certificates for participation, skill improvement, and sportsmanship.

    • Speed round on what each student can practice, all they have learned

Conclusion

This seven-week session provides an engaging and supportive environment for parent-child pairs. By participating together in fencing, families can enhance their bond, support each other’s growth, and develop skills that extend beyond the sport.
